Who it is for

Who this book is for

For any child sitting either exam. Vocabulary is the one thing that lifts every paper at once: the GL word questions test it directly, the English comprehension turns on it, and a child who knows the word in a maths story problem reads it faster. The words are grouped by idea, a unit a week, and the second half of the book is the night-before checklist for every paper.

How every unit works

  • What it looks like. The question as the paper prints it, and an example.
  • The method. Five steps, written to be said aloud.
  • Worked example. Step by step, and why each wrong option is there.
  • The three traps. How the question is usually lost, and what to do instead.
  • Try it. Ten questions, easier first, exam level from question 4, with working space.

How the book reaches you

A PDF, A4, made to read on a tablet or print at home. It is licensed to your household and every page carries your name and email, so please keep it in the family. Download it up to five times a month from the guides page; it stays on your account.

Checked twice

Every practice question in the book was generated and checked by machine, then read by a person before it went in. The answers at the back give the reason for every one, so a child who gets a question wrong can see why, not just that. If you find a fault, email info@uplift-learning.co.uk and it will be corrected in the next edition.

Questions

Questions parents ask

Is it for GL or CSSE?

Both. The words are the words either paper uses, and the exam tips in Part B are given paper by paper, so a family reads the ones for the papers their child is sitting and skips the rest.

How long does a unit take?

About twenty minutes: read the twenty-five words with their meanings and sentences, then the ten-question test. A unit a week from the start of Year 5 covers the book by the summer.

Where do the words come from?

From the words that appear in 11+ papers and the reading a Year 5 child is expected to manage, in three bands from everyday to demanding. Every test question was generated from the bank and then read by a person.
