Keeping your child safe

Last updated: July 2026

My commitment

The welfare of every child I teach comes before everything else. That means safe lessons, appropriate boundaries, and taking any concern seriously, even a small one.

Checks and qualifications

• I hold a valid Enhanced DBS check with the Children’s Barred List, the highest level of check available, and I am happy to show the certificate to any parent on request.
• Until January 2026 self-employed tutors were not permitted to apply for an Enhanced check at all. That route opened and I went through it, so the check you would expect from a school teacher is the one I hold.
• I studied at Westcliff High School for Boys and hold a degree in Aerospace Engineering from Queen Mary University of London.
• I have been tutoring since February 2024 and have worked with over 60 students.

How online lessons are kept safe

Where lessons happen

Lessons run over Google Meet, using a link sent to the parent in advance. I ask that your child works in a shared family space, such as a kitchen or living room, rather than a bedroom, and that a parent or guardian is at home and nearby throughout.

You are welcome to sit in on any lesson, at any time, without arranging it first. You never need a reason.

Cameras

Lessons are taught with cameras off, using audio and a shared screen. Your child does not need a working camera, and I keep mine off as well. Everything happens on the shared screen, so you can see exactly what is being worked on at any moment.

Mock exams are the exception. There a camera does need to be on so the paper can be invigilated properly, and I will always ask your permission first.

If you would rather cameras were on during lessons, just say and I will turn mine on.

Recording

I do not record lessons. If a recording were ever proposed, for example so a student could revisit an explanation, I would ask for your written permission first and explain exactly how it would be stored and when it would be deleted.

Communication

Clear boundaries protect your child and protect me:

• All scheduling, payment and progress discussions go through the parent or guardian.
• I do not message students privately, and I do not contact students through social media or gaming platforms.
• I do not accept friend or follower requests from students.
• If a student needs to send me work, it comes via a parent or a parent-visible channel.
• I keep communication to reasonable hours and always in writing where possible.

Professional conduct

• Lessons stay focused on the subject being taught.
• I treat every student with respect, whatever their background, beliefs or additional needs.
• I never ask a student to keep anything secret from their parents.
• I do not meet students in person, as all tuition is delivered online.

If something worries you

If you are uneasy about anything at all, whether it is something I said, how a lesson went, or something unrelated to me that you would like to flag, please tell me. No concern is too small and raising one will never cause a problem.

Message me on WhatsApp at 07766 005271 or email info@uplift-learning.co.uk and I will respond promptly and take it seriously.

If a child discloses something to me

Occasionally a child mentions something during a lesson that suggests they may be at risk. If that happens I will:

• Listen calmly and take them seriously, without pressing them for details
• Avoid promising to keep it secret, because I cannot promise that where a child may be at risk
• Write down what was said as soon as possible, in the child's own words
• Raise it with the parent or guardian, unless doing so might put the child at greater risk
• Contact the relevant local authority children's services, the NSPCC, or the police if I believe a child is at risk of harm

I would always rather raise something and be wrong than stay quiet and be right.
